Compression Hosiery
InStep carries a wide range of medical grade compression hosiery to help with circulation conditions. Compression hosiery improves venous and lymphatic blood flow. The tight compression socks help veins return blood back to the heart. They can be used as a treatment and also as preventative care.
We recommend compression hosiery for those with any of the following:
-
Swollen feet, ankles, and/or legs
-
Prolonged standing or sitting
-
Tired, aching, fatigued legs
-
Family history of venous leg disorders
-
Spider Veins
-
Varicose veins
-
Overweight
-
Expectant mothers
-
Mild to moderate swelling
-
Those who are travelling by air
There are 3 different compression levels. Most of our patients fall into the mild to moderate support categories. The higher the compression, the tighter the socks are, and the more difficult they are put on. The chiropodist at InStep Foot Clinic can assess your feet and legs and determine which compression strength would best address your condition(s) and give you tips as to how to put them on.
1) Mild Support - 15-20mmHg
Tired, aching, fatigued legs
Minor ankle and leg swelling
Minor varicosities
2) Moderate Support - 20-30mmHg (Medical Grade Strength)
Moderate and ankle and leg swelling
Moderate varicosities
3) Firm Support - 30-40mmHg (Medical Grade Strength)
Moderate to severe ankle and leg swelling
Moderate to severe varicosities

FAQs
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No, as a primary health practitioner, the InStep chiropodist is able to prescribe and dispense compression hosiery. However, most extended health plans require a family physician's referral in order for compression stockings to be covered. It is always a good idea to double-check your coverage before coming in.
Are they covered under my extended health plan?
Most plans cover compression stockings, but we do recommend checking the details of your plan. Some plans cover only medical grade strength and most require a family doctor's referral.
How much do compression stockings cost?
Prices depend on style and compression strength. They start at around $50 per pair for mild compression, and go up as high as $160 per pair for firm compression stockings.
Do I need to book an appointment?
If this is your first time getting compression stockings, it is highly recommended that you book an appointment with the chiropodist. The chiropodist would be able to do a full assessment, measure and fit, and oversee your compression hosiery therapy. The chiropodist would also show you how to put on the compression stockings during your visit. We recommend wearing shorts or loose-fitting pants to the appointment.
I've worn compression stockings, but they were very uncomfortable. What should I do?
When we hear this complaint, the first thing we need to revisit is the fit. Sometimes if you were not measured correctly, the compression stockings will cause discomfort.
Will my feet get sweaty and uncomfortable wearing the compression stockings?
InStep carries THERAFIRM® products, which are soft, cool and comfortable for all day wear. They are designed to wick moisture so moisture evaporates from the skin quickly. THERAFIRM® products feature soft, comfort bands on the knee-high stockings and trouser socks, soft waistbands on pantyhose and tights, and a soft, expandable top on maternity pantyhose.
