What is Massage Therapy?

Types of Massage
Below are the three most common forms of massage provided.

Therapeutic/
Rehabilitation
Therapeutic massage is used to treat pain and chronic health issues, and may have a relaxation element to it.

The massage therapist typically sees the patient frequently for the first few weeks or months. Advanced techniques (e.g. deep tissue or trigger point) may also be incorporated into treatments. As pain levels decrease, visits become less frequent.

Conditions requiring therapeutic massage include: fibromyalgia, chronic aches and pains, cancer massage, sports injuries, repetitive stress or strain injuries (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome), whiplash, arthritis, and posture issues.

Deep Tissue
Deep tissue massage helps relieve tension in the deep muscles and connective tissue. It is often recommended for people experiencing chronic pain, who participate in strenuous physical activity, or those who have sustained physical injury. Often, people who receive deep tissue massage will experience muscle ache for a day or two.

Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger points (also known as knots) are small, palpable nodules (balls) in the muscle that causes pain when pressure is applied. Trigger points may cause pain or twitches at the site, or may elicit referred pain and twitches in the surrounding area. The defining symptom of a trigger point is referred pain.

Trigger points may be caused by a number of factors, some of which include muscle overload, direct trauma to the region or indirect trauma (e.g. car accident). Deactivating trigger points will help reduce local and referred pain.
