Orthopaedic Footwear
InStep Foot Clinic carries orthopaedic footwear in hard-to-find sizes with extra-width and extra depth not available in regular retail stores. Good footwear provides the support essential to good foot health. We carry orthopaedic footwear to help meet the needs of our patients who have difficulty finding shoes that fit properly. Also, orthopaedic footwear have removable insoles that easily accomodate InStep custom orthotics.
InStep primarily carries the APEX brand and we have Apex shoe samples in the clinic for you to try on for sizing.
These shoes meet the structural requirements for a shoe to be considered orthopaedic by insurance provider standards.
FAQ
What makes a shoe orthopaedic?
Orthopaedic footwear generally comes in different widths and provides exceptional support. For a shoe to be considered orthopaedic, the shoe manufacturer has to market their footwear as "orthopaedic". InStep carries orthopaedic brands such as Apex and Drew.
Do shoes come with custom insoles/orthotics/inserts?
InStep Foot Clinic offers custom orthotics, but they are sold separately from orthopaedic footwear.
Please note that custom orthotics and orthopaedic footwear fall under separate sections of your insurance plan.
Do I need a prescription/referral?
Most insurance plans require a prescription and assessment by a qualified health professional that explains why orthopaedic shoes are necessary for you. The chiropodist at InStep would be happy to provide the assessment during a visit.
If you need a pair of orthopaedic footwear and are not worried about insurance coverage, you can simply walk in, check out the samples, and we will order the pair of shoes for you. You do not require an appointment.
What is the process for getting orthopaedic footwear through my insurance provider?
1) Book an appointment with the InStep chiropodist for a full assessment.
During the visit, the chiropodist will assess your feet and determine whether orthopaedic footwear would be a good option for you. If so, during the visit, you will select the style of shoe that you prefer and the chiropodist will provide you with a predetermination letter for orthopaedic footwear on the same day. The letter will include your prescription, state your assessment, and the style, model, and price of the orthopaedic footwear.
2) Submit the letter to your provider for predetermination.
3) Your provider will let you know whether you are approved for the orthopaedic footwear.
It usually takes 2 weeks to hear back from a provider.
4) Come into InStep to pay for the shoes.
We will provide you a receipt which you can submit to your provider for reimbursement. We place the order for the approved shoes. Footwear arrives in about 1-2 weeks.
5) Pick up your shoes
If there are any issues with the sizing, we are happy to exchange your shoes with a different size. We do not provide refunds.
What is your purchase and return policy?
We require a 50% non-refundable deposit upon placing the order. We do not offer refunds. Exchanges only.

Most shoes at InStep cost about $200-$400.
