Did you know that members of the College of Chiropodists of Ontario are the ONLY profession to have orthotic management in their scope of practice.

 

Chiropodists have extensive training in the foot, ankles, knees, hips, and especially in how the body functions (biomechanics) which makes them experts in prescribing the best orthotic for you!

 

Chiropodist can manage orthotic therapy. 

Custom orthotics, or custom insoles/inserts, are a medical device that controls the way you move. A pair of properly prescribed custom orthotics relieves pain in the foot, knees, hips, and back, and ensures a healthier future for your entire body. Here’s How Your Custom Orthotics are Made at InStep:

1 - Biomechanical Examination

The chiropodist checks your feet to see what conditions need to be addressed (examples: callus, flat feet, heel pain, claw toes, bunions, etc.). The chiropodist analyzes your feet, how you walk, how your feet move, and then writes a detailed prescription for your orthotics. The chiropodist consults with you to decide which style of orthotics would best suit your shoe wardrobe.

2 - 3D Laser Scan or Plaster Cast

The chiropodist casts your feet with plaster or scans your feet with a 3D Laser Scanner. It is important that we capture your feet in a neutral, non-weight bearing position while you are sitting or lying down. We do not ask you to stand on a mat or foam box because stepping down while taking your impressions would capture your feet with its deformities and we would lose the neutral shape of your feet.

3 - Made in Specialized Orthotic Laboratory

We send your plaster casts/3D image to an accredited orthotic lab along with your detailed orthotic prescription. Your orthotics are accurately and precisely made in an orthotic lab which employs the most cutting-edge production automation technologies, able to exhibit sub-millimeter accuracy. Needless to say, we do not make our orthotics in-house!

4 - Orthotic Fitting

Once your new orthotics are made, we meet with you to check whether the orthotics properly fit your feet, and also to educate you on your new pair of orthotics.

5 - Check-Ups

Just like eyeglasses’ prescriptions, orthotics prescriptions can change, too! It is important to have your feet regularly checked to see whether your orthotic device continues to be effective. At InStep, all follow-up orthotic appointments are complimentary. Should your orthotics require an adjustment, they are also complimentary. We want to make sure that your orthotics are working! Also, we have a lifetime guarantee against breakage of the device.

Chiropodists complete 3.5 years of advanced medical training after an undergraduate degree, earning a Advanced Diploma of Podiatric Medicine for a total of 7.5 years of academic training, 3.5 of which are just looking at the feet. 

 

That's more training than a physiotherapist or chiropractor!

Insurance
 

Most health plans have coverage for custom orthotics and prefer to have orthotics prescribed and dispensed by a foot specialist.

 

We recommend giving your health care provider a phone call before receiving custom orthotics to be sure of your coverage. We provide all patients with a detailed receipt, the biomechanical examination and gait analysis, details of the raw materials and casting technique, and prescription to submit to your health care provider for reimbursement.

 

Doctor's Referral

 

Although you do not need a doctor's referral to receive custom orthotics, some health plan providers require a doctor's referral to be reimbursed. We recommend giving your provider a call to be sure.

 

If your doctor has provided you with a referral to another therapist or location, you may still come to our clinic. You have the right to choose which health practitioner you see.
